The purpose of this conference is to unite and equip Christians and the church on the issue of sexuality. The world is experiencing great changes in the area of sexuality. Homosexuality is being considered an equally valid expression of sexuality and homosexuals are being given the special status of a visible minority that has been discriminated against. Canada and other countries are revising the definition of marriage to include same-sex marriages. Schools teach students that that they have a right to be sexually active. If they have any confusion about their sexuality that this must mean they have been born with different sexual interests and they should explore their interests, deciding what kind of sexuality they will embrace as they become adults. The media promotes having "sex in the city" and having "friends with benefits." In our own personal lives Christians are often ashamed to admit what everyone knows - that Christianity does not make us immune to our sexual passions. Everything doesn't get fixed just because we come into relationship with God. Christians are often surprised and disillusioned because they still have sexual struggles. We haven't had realistic expectations, or an informed understanding of why we struggle--much less, what to do about it.
Sweeping changes are happening everywhere else around the world as well. The changes that have happened between 1970 and 2005 in North America are happening at an even faster pace in Africa, China, India and Latin America. Christians and churches in these places seem to be floundering in the sweeping changes; sometimes responding with fear, hate or ignorance. Other times, just not knowing what to do.
For more than twenty years, Exodus has ministered to the homosexual, the gender confused (including the transgendered) and to victims of sexual abuse. At the same time Exodus has worked to equip Christians and the Church to uphold Biblical standards of life-style, teaching and practice, in a non-judgemental manner. It aims to offer support for ministries and churches that help those who struggle with sexual brokenness and to their families.
Exodus encourages networking and collaboration between Christian ministries which work to offer support to men and women struggling with homosexuality, lesbianism and other issues.
The Exodus 2008 conference will:
- Help individuals who are looking for help in dealing with their sexuality
- Help Christians and church leaders determine how to respond to those within the church who need help
- Help Christians and churches learn how to respond to people outside the church.
- Help people understand what is happening around the world in places like Africa, China, Europe, India, and Latin America
Aims and values of the Exodus Conference
The Exodus conference seeks to:
- Contribute to equipping ministry leaders and workers in the church in the knowledge and practise of helping the sexually broken, including the gender confused, and the victims of abuse.
- Provide a resource that reflects the Scriptures in the teachings and presentations offered, and in the spirit of those who present at the conference.
- Provide a safe, non-judgemental space for individuals seeking help and guidance, and for those who support them, in issues relating to sexuality, and in how to relate to the church.
- Encourage an atmosphere of worship and fellowship in which those who seek sexual wholeness can relate in fellowship, friendship and fun to others.
- Offer perspective, based on the Scriptures, in the current debate on homosexuality in the church.
- Recognise the value of therapy and counselling in helping the sexually broken to wholeness.
- Respect the alternative views that individuals, organisations and denominations hold with respect to homosexuality and its practise, which differ from those understood by Exodus.
Exodus member ministries are drawn from Africa, Asia Pacific, Brazil, China, Europe, India, and Latin America.
